E3 2012: Nintendo Conference Highlighted by WiiU

The Nintendo E3 press conference this morning was the big coming out party for the WiiU. The new console, with its innovative tablet controller was re-unveiled to the masses, after debuting last year at E3 with mostly prototype software. Previous conferences this year have shown off a few WiiU games, such as Ubisoft's ZombiU, but this was where all the big launch games were announced.

Nintendo has had a shaky record of hardware launches lately, and the 3DS still struggles to gain market share, after launching with a weak lineup. Reggie promised 23 games to be shown, saying that was only a small share of the lineup on show. That's quite an impressive number for a console launch window.

New titles such as Pikmin 3, New Super Marios Bros U, and Scribblenauts Unlimited were shown off to an enthusiastic crowd. However, after the announcement of Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, a 3rd party sizzle reel was shown, highlighting mostly games that have ALREADY been released on other consoles. By the time the WiiU launches, some of these games will be over a year old. Party/ casual games such as WiiU Fit and some horrible looking karaoke game were also shown, to mild reception.

The Nintendo 3DS was given a few minutes of screen time. Showing off New Super Mario Bros 2 and a new Paper Mario. A new Luigi Mansion game was also shown off, looking very similar to the first game.

Nintendo bizarrely chose to end their conference with a energy-draining explanation of NintendoLand, which appears to be a tech demo shell. It took up a lot of time, and no one seemed to be interested.

How did you guys like the Nintendo conference?
