Hands-On First Impressions: LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes

It's been four long years since the first LEGO Batman was released. Countless LEGO games have been released since then, but now Batman is back and he's bringing his Super Friends. Here's what Chris thought of the time he spent with the first few moments in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.

Dead Men Tell No Tales: Reflections on Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut

D. Bethel explores how the extended Mass Effect 3 endings affect the game and what they say about the players who demanded them.  This is spoiler free, but clear insinuations to the game's endings (both pre- and post-Extended Cut) are made and knowledge of the endings is assumed.

Hands-On First Impressions: Spec Ops: The Line

Oh boy, here we go. Another third person shooter, complete with cover mechanics, macho alpha males, and douchechill-inducing American patriotism. To be totally honest, those were my exact thoughts when I first heard of Spec Ops: The Line, and had written the game off as decidedly "not for me" pretty long ago. I don't tend to enjoy games outside of my comfort zone of the action-adventure and grappling sports entertainment genres. Shooters for me are simply too chaotic, too jock-tacular for me to ever really get into, outside of some of the true standouts in that space. Much to my surprise, I found Spec Ops to be completely enjoyable.

Tickets to NintendoLand: Looking on the Bright Side of E3

E3 2012 has come and gone, and Chris takes a look back at the most polarizing part of the show: Nintendo's unveiling of the WiiU. Were things really as bad as they seemed? Or was this merely a case of a very Japanese company miscalculating what to show to American audiences?

Trials By Fire: Echoes in Hallways

Trials by Fire is a column from D. Bethel whereby two game demos are arbitrarily judged and one is declared the victor.  In actuality, it's a veiled rant.  This edition discusses video games created as adaptations of other existing properties, as exemplified by the demos for The Walking Dead and South Park: Tenorman's Revenge.

E3 2012: Nintendo Conference Highlighted by WiiU

The Nintendo E3 press conference this morning was the big coming out party for the WiiU. The new console, with its innovative tablet controller was re-unveiled to the masses, after debuting last year at E3 with mostly prototype software. Previous conferences this year have shown off a few WiiU games, such as Ubisoft's ZombiU, but this was where all the big launch games were announced.

Nintendo has had a shaky record of hardware launches lately, and the 3DS still struggles to gain market share, after launching with a weak lineup. Reggie promised 23 games to be shown, saying that was only a small share of the lineup on show. That's quite an impressive number for a console launch window.

New titles such as Pikmin 3, New Super Marios Bros U, and Scribblenauts Unlimited were shown off to an enthusiastic crowd. However, after the announcement of Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, a 3rd party sizzle reel was shown, highlighting mostly games that have ALREADY been released on other consoles. By the time the WiiU launches, some of these games will be over a year old. Party/ casual games such as WiiU Fit and some horrible looking karaoke game were also shown, to mild reception.

The Nintendo 3DS was given a few minutes of screen time. Showing off New Super Mario Bros 2 and a new Paper Mario. A new Luigi Mansion game was also shown off, looking very similar to the first game.

Nintendo bizarrely chose to end their conference with a energy-draining explanation of NintendoLand, which appears to be a tech demo shell. It took up a lot of time, and no one seemed to be interested.

How did you guys like the Nintendo conference?

E3 2012: Exclusives Highlight Sony Conference

The next game from the makers of Heavy Rain was announced at Sony's E3 conference tonight. Titled Beyond: Two Souls, the game stars the digital likeness of Ellen Page, along with presumably several other character actors. The game appears to be of a similar style to Heavy Rain; heavily cinematic presentation controlled by quicktime events.

The last game shown at the conference, Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, stole the show. Following the bizarre and overlong debut of the Sony Wonderbook, the trailer for The Last of Us showed some brutal hand to hand combat and pulse pounding gameplay. Naughty Dog has shown they know how to do big games with the Uncharted series, and The Last of Us looks to be amazing as well.

E3 2012: Ubisoft Announces Watch Dogs *UPDATED*

After a pretty weird press conference today, Ubisoft had one last surprise in store. A new IP, titled Watch Dogs was unveiled with the mysterious trailer found above. The game itself appears to be an open world/ future crime/ hacker/ gun...thing. It looks awesome, and is the first big surprise of E3 2012. We'll update this post as more information becomes available.

UPDATE: The game is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, who have been hard at work on the title for nearly two years. No platforms were announced, although from the look of the trailers, a next-gen launch wouldn't be all that surprising.
