You're Out! 38 Studios Lays Off Entire Staff

It is being reported that troubled developer 38 Studios has let their entire staff go today.  Apparently, the staff hadn't been paid since May 1st, and as you're no doubt aware, the developer has been in a pretty sticky financial situation.  Hopefully everyone who was let go will be able to land on their feet.

Possibly the biggest loss here is that of Big Huge Games, which 38 acquired in 2009. Developer of the legendary Rise of Nations series, Big Huge Games was saved from closure by 38 Studios after publisher THQ announced that Big Huge would be closed within 60 days unless a buyer stepped in.

The studio contains a lot of tested talent, so hopefully someone will swoop in to save them again.

38 Studios in Major Financial Trouble, Baseball Puns Follow

This week has been a bad week for Rhode Island-based 38 Studios. The former Green Monster Games, founded by World Series hero Curt Shilling has stumbled towards insolvency at a rapid rate. You might remember 38 Studios as the development team behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, which was released earlier this year. That game turned out to be so aggressively mediocre that Rock gave up halfway through his review, not exactly a harbinger of quality.

Parallel Paths: How Nintendo, Marvel Comics, and the WWE Lost Their Audience. And How They're Winning Them Back.

Videogames, pro wrestling, and comic books all played a huge part in my childhood, and continue to entertain me to this day. That’s not to say there haven’t been very serious ups-and-downs in my fandom over the past 25 years. All of these products have experienced incredible highs, and dismal failures in their recent history. What you may not realize is just how similar of paths they’ve all taken to their current success. It seems almost cosmic in a way, as if God Himself is a giant friggin’ dork.
