AGTurbo Says: Call of Duty Sales Fall in the UK

Our man with the numbers, AGTurbo, shares some interesting info on Call of Duty sales in the United Kingdom.

While Call of Duty has been a super mega behemoth multi-billion dollar a year sales monster, it is losing some steam in the United Kingdom. According to GFK Chart Track, which measures videogame sales in the UK, Modern Warfare 3 sales are down 451,789 copies from Black Ops. Black Ops (2010) sold 3,266,289 copies compared to Modern Warfare 3 (2011) selling 2,816,609 copies.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (2009) sold roughly 2.8 million copies the same timeframe. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sales are currently at Modern Warfare 2 levels. This data could suggest that Call of Duty is  nearing its' saturation point in the UK.

For the debut week of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, the overall unit sales were 1.4% down from Black Ops, but there was 1% more revenue due to high attachment rates of COD Elite and Hardened edition to offset the decrease in unit sales. What makes this significant is the UK is the 2nd biggest consumer of Call of Duty behind the United States. However UK on a per capita basis the consumption of Call of Duty is higher than the US. The UK has one fifth the population of the United States. UK selling 3.2 million copies of Black Ops in 7 weeks is the equivalent of 16 million units of Black Ops being sold in the US.

Activision reported that Black Ops to date has sold over 14 million units. Unless Black Ops fans were disappointed with Modern Warfare 3 and holding out for the next Treyarch Call of Duty, the best of Call of Duty sales in the UK seem to have already peaked.
