Assassin's Creed IV: Hands-Off Impressions

We got a look at Assassin's Creed IV today at PAX East! While it was a lot of footage you've probably already seen, there was a fair amount of new gameplay shown to the crowds, hungry for more hot assassin action!

Assassin's Creed IV was just announced a few weeks ago, and KGB got a look at it today during our trip to Beantown. We were shown two videos, one focusing on the design of the newest installment in the blockbuster franchise, and the other a general overview of the new setting on the high seas.

Assassins will be able to explore an open world, spanning from Cuba to Kingston, aboard their very own pirate ship. It seems like the team at Ubisoft is taking a lot of player feedback from the pirate missions that were in Assassin's Creed III, and expanding on their strengths. A full crew will sail with the player this time, and it seems evident that a great wealth of subsystems will come along with this.

Assassin-ing dudes, pirate style.

New environments were included in the demo we were shown, with lush jungles providing heavy foliage for the Assassin to sneak through. The groundbreaking tree-running system from ACIII will make a return in the new game, and the developers at Ubisoft are promising a return to more stealth-based gameplay in Assassin's Creed IV.

There's a lot riding on this new Assassin's Creed, especially with the somewhat tepid response to ACIII. Moving the series to the high seas is a great risk, but the series arguably needed a somewhat major shakeup. What we were shown looks promising, and we have high hopes that ACIV will be a step up when it released this Holiday season.

Chris Linendoll is ready to set sail.
