Hell must have frozen over. KGB Radio co-host Pat Ronk actually managed to write an article. Speaking of Hell, here's a look at Doom 64. This version of the classic id shooter had some major differences from other ports, and Pat takes a look at what makes this one so special.
Doom 4 is going to happen at some point in the future, but the "when" part is stuck in the limbo that is id Software's mantra: "When it's done."
In the meantime, however, a gem in the series may have passed under your radar.
Doom 64 is probably the most overlooked of all of the Doom titles. Yet, it pulls off one of the most atmospheric experiences in the whole franchise (perhaps even eclipsing Doom 3). It features an incredible ambient soundtrack that replaces the usual rock-oriented midi (example: http://www.youtube.com/
Some of the music was actually shared with the Playstation One release of Doom from a year and a half earlier. The similarities end there and Doom 64 has it's own suite of levels and they are all original to the game. As a whole, they managed to create a Doom experience that actually felt like "horror" instead of just endless enemies in ridiculous labyrinths.
Recently, some fans of the game have been working on bringing this experience to modern day PC's while maintaining the amazing atmosphere. This comes in the form of Doom 64 EX, the most full-featured conversion available. You can get it here: http://doom64ex.wordpress.com/.
All you need is that Doom 64 ROM that you made when you backed up all of your N64 cartridges to your computer!
What... you didn't make copies of your N64 games manually? Well, luckily for you it's quite easy to get a hold of. So, utilize your google-fu and scour the depths of Hell (a.k.a. internet) for that Doom 64 ROM and get playing!
